This August in Edmonton has been cooler and rainier than usual, giving lawns and gardens a good drink before the late-summer heat arrives. With warmer days forecasted, now is the perfect time to make a few smart moves that will keep your yard healthy heading into September.
Mow and Water with Intention
Recent rains mean your lawn has had plenty of moisture, but the upcoming heat will dry things out quickly. Let grass grow to around 4 inches before mowing it back down to 3 – 3.5 inches. This protects the roots from stress when the sun returns. Watering early in the morning will ensure the moisture penetrates the soil and doesn’t evaporate in the heat. If you’d prefer a hands-off approach, our Landscape Maintenance services can handle mowing schedules and watering guidance for you.
Deadhead Selectively
Cooler weather may have slowed blooms, but deadheading spent flowers now will encourage a fresh flush when the warm weather returns. Leave plants like coneflowers and ornamental grasses — they feed pollinators and will add beauty and interest well into fall and winter.
Stay on Top of Weeds
Rain brings growth, and not just for your plants. Weeds can take advantage of the damp soil and spread quickly. Pulling them while the soil is still soft makes the job easier and prevents them from going to seed. Top up mulch if needed to help suppress late-season weeds and conserve moisture.
Plan Ahead for Fall
With cooler nights already here, it’s a great time to prepare for fall planting. Think about which bulbs you’d like to enjoy next spring and make a list for September. If you’re considering a fall crop, fast-growing vegetables like radishes or leafy greens can still be sown for a quick harvest.
