The unofficial start to summer has come and gone—here’s how to keep your outdoor space thriving!
The May Long Weekend, often called the unofficial start to summer in Edmonton, marks a key turning point in the gardening calendar. The risk of frost is behind us, and it’s finally time to dig in and get your yard in full swing. Whether you’re a seasoned green thumb or just getting started, here’s what you should be focusing on now:
Plant with Confidence
Now is prime time to plant:
- Trees & Shrubs – It’s safe to put in new trees, evergreens, and shrubs. Get them established before the real summer heat arrives.
- Perennials – Fill in flower beds with hardy, colorful perennials that will return year after year.
- Vegetables & Herbs – If you haven’t already, get those tomatoes, peppers, herbs, and leafy greens into raised beds or containers. They’ll thrive with the longer, warmer days ahead.
Softscape Maintenance
Top up your mulch! Topping up your mulch not only helps your soil retain moisture, but also keeps your weeds down and gives your beds a tidy, finished look. Aim for about 2–3 inches around perennials, trees, and shrubs. Keep it slightly away from stems and trunks to prevent rot.
Give your lawn some attention! Now that the grass is actively growing, be sure to apply a spring fertilizer to boost green growth and root development, spot-treat for weeds before they spread, and keep mowing regularly! (set your blade high to encourage deep roots) Note: If you’ve recently overseeded, be sure to water consistently until it’s well established.
Speaking of water, new plants need consistent moisture—especially in the early weeks. Water deeply, early in the day, and aim for 1 inch per week including rainfall.
Bonus tip: Consider adding drip lines or a timer to your irrigation system for low-maintenance watering.
Hardscape & Outdoor Living Areas
The hardscapes in your yard also need attention in the spring. This is a great time to clean and inspect patios and walkways, re-level pavers if needed, and plan or book any summer installs like retaining walls, outdoor kitchens, or new patios while there’s still space in the schedule! Doing an annual cleaning and inspection helps prolong the life and beauty of your hardscapes.
